Why I Love HydraFacial™ Contest Winner

We recently held the Why I Love HydraFacial™ contest, and received some great testimonials! We are excited to announce that Vee Kelsey-McKee from Skinful Pleasures, Salt Lake City, Utah was our Grand Prize winner!

Vee shared with us a touching story about one of her clients who is a skin cancer survivor, and was unhappy with how her skin was left after all the cancer treatments. Here is how Vee and the HydraFacial™ machine helped her:

“I have a client who had facial skin cancer removed, followed by chemotherapy and reconstructive surgery. When she came to me after this, she still had some visible scarring and her grayish-white skin was congested and not carrying out its excretory function. She was depressed about her appearance. We started doing HydraFacial™ treatments every two weeks with the vacuum on a lower setting. After six weeks, she called me very excited because she had started breaking out—a sign that her skin was returning to its normal functions by getting rid of the impurities that it had been harboring. As we continued over the next few weeks, her skin cleared up and became pink and healthy-looking, and her scars softened and became unnoticeable. On a visit to her dermatologist, he told her that whatever she was doing was definitely working and to keep doing it. Of course, she told him about the HydraFacial™. The icing on the cake, though, was when another woman stopped her while she was jogging and said, ‘You have the most beautiful skin, it just glows. What are you doing to keep it like that?’ She is still doing regular HydraFacial™ treatments…

…My HydraFacial™ machine gives me the ability to truly help people to look better, have healthier skin, and feel better about themselves. And that’s why I love it.”

Congratulations Vee! Thank you so much for sharing this touching story with us. If you live in the Salt Lake City area, make sure to stop in and see Vee!

Beating The Office Blues

Working all day in an office can be dreary. The florescent lights, ugly carpet and lack of fresh air can leave you drained by 5:00 pm. When you are tired and stressed, the health of your skin can suffer. Luckily, there are some things you can do to keep your energy up, your mood happy, and your body and skin healthy.

Tip 1: Our bodies can only be stationary for so long before becoming uncomfortable. It is important to leave your desk once in a while and stretch your muscles. Instead of emailing or calling a coworker, walk over to their desk to talk to them! Go for short walks once or twice a day, which will help keep weight gain down and focus levels up.

Tip 2: When sitting at a desk all day, it is easy to reach for unhealthy snacks and food. Keep healthy, premeasured snacks at your desk to prevent mindless munching. Snacks like nuts, fresh fruit, turkey and peanut butter will help give you a burst of much needed energy throughout the day.

Tip 3: While it is tempting to sit at our desk throughout lunch and check emails, do a little online shopping and catch up with our friends, it is so important to step away from your desk for your lunch hour. Get outside; enjoy the sun/clouds/rain etc, and breath in the fresh air.

Tip 4: For those of you who are brave enough to endure ridicule from your co-workers, bring an exercise ball to sit on instead of a chair. This will help you to keep proper posture throughout the day, strengthen your core and lower back, as well as help improve your balance. To top it all off, you can burn up to 350 calories per day! For more details on how to make the change, check this out.

Tip 5: Lastly, since you spend so much time at your desk, you should fill your area with things that make you happy. Bright colored flowers, a decorative wall calendar, pictures of your family, etc. Placing your favorite things around you will help to boost your mood when your feeling a little blue. Check out some fun cubicle designs here.

Do you have other ideas on how to beat the office blues? If you do, we would love to hear them! After all, we spend all day in the office too….

Happy Fourth Of July!

Since our world revolves around skincare, we thought it would be appropriate to share some summer skincare tips with you. Here are our tips to protect your skin this 4th of July:

The most crucial part of healthy summer skin, is making sure you are consistently applying sunscreen. Don’t forget your lips, ears, and neck as these areas tend to be forgotten. Sunburns are not only painful, but also contribute to long-term skin damage.

Spending time outside is the best part of summer, and Cooibar Quality Sun Protection has created a whole line of stylish clothing that provides SPF protection. These clothes are perfect for an afternoon jog, a day of golf or a fun filled day at the beach. Make sure to check out all their
cute summer wear!

Our eyes our so precious, yet sometimes we forget to protect them! It is important to wear polarized sunglasses that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. In addition to the damage the sun can do to your eyes, not wearing sunglasses may cause you to squint, which over time will create fine lines around the eyes- something no one wants.

Lucky for us, big, floppy hats are in style! They are the perfect accessory to every outfit, and they offer great protection from the sun! If you are not into wearing hats, make sure to put sunscreen on your scalp. If you’ve ever burned your head/scalp- you know the pain it causes! Plus, a peeling scalp is never attractive.

For complete coverage, we suggest our UV Smart™ SPF 50+ Sunscreen. It offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and goes on smooth for ultra sheer coverage that blends with your natural skin tone. Click here to see how easily the UV Smart works with all skin tones!

Edge Systems Supports The Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center

This past Saturday, Edge Systems threw on sunscreen and running shoes and participated in the 26th Annual Jonathan Jaques Champions Run For Life event. We had the pleasure of sponsoring Nicholas, Alexa, and Carlos, and enjoyed cheering them on during the run. “We are so proud to be a part of this amazing organization. These children are fighting a battle that takes courage, strength and a lot of heart. We look forward to meeting these heroes at the event every year!” said Megan from Customer Service.

Over 350 children battling cancer or rare blood disorders participated in the relay race in Downtown Long Beach on Saturday, June 11, 2011. Each child had the opportunity to run with the torch while friends, family and sponsors showed their support by running beside them. The day was filled with smiles, hope and inspiration. Guests enjoyed several carnival style games, face painting and lunch sponsored by McDonalds. Many child stars also came out to support this amazing cause including Angus T. Jones from Two and a Half Men, Tanya Chisholm from Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush, and Kevin Horton from Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place. The children (and adults) enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with some of their favorite TV celebrities.

We have participated in the Annual Champions Run For Life for the past 14 years and it has become an event that the company holds near to our hearts. We donate a portion of our proceeds in order to sponsor children at the annual event. “Each year, all of us at Edge look forward to the JJCC Torch Run. Seeing the kid’s positive attitudes, bravery and sharing in their success benefits all of us at Edge Systems. We are all very happy to be a part of creating such special memories and donating to the Long Beach Memorial Children’s Cancer Center,” says Bill Cohen, Vice President/International Sales.

Celebrate Memorial Day weekend with "Don't Fry Day"!

Today is officially Don’t Fry Day! A day devoted to sun safety awareness and skin cancer prevention, started by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Before we all head outside this Memorial Day weekend, arm yourself with the protection you need.

There are only 31 days before the first day of summer. This means the sun is stronger and sunscreen is essential. With the summer heat rising, we will be spending more time outdoors enjoying all the summer activities. Start now and make it a habit to apply sunscreen every morning and reapply as often as needed. Carrying a tube of sunscreen wherever you go will be a reminder that you need to reapply. Don’t just buy any sunscreen - there are important factors to look for before you make your next purchase.

SPF – Sun Protection Factor. Sunscreens are classified by the strength of their SPF, starting as low as 2 and going beyond 50. These numbers refer to the product's ability to deflect the sun's burning rays (UVB). SPF measures the time it takes to produce a sunburn reaction on protected skin compared to unprotected skin. Look for sunblock SPF 30, which blocks out 97% UVB rays.

UVB and UVA Rays: UVB rays are what people are most familiar with, since they are the cause of sunburn. Their intensity depends on the time of day, location, and time of year. However, the lesser known UVA rays can be extremely dangerous because they are present during all daylight hours, regardless of the temperature outside or the time of year. These rays also penetrate the skin deeper than UVB rays and are most commonly associated with aging and wrinkles.

Forgotten Areas: Ears. Feet. Hands. Skin cancer is common in these areas since they are almost always exposed to the sun and are often times left out of the sunscreen application process. Add these areas to your daily routine!

We recommend wearing sunscreen everyday, try the HydraFacial UV Smart™ Daily. UV Smart™ Daily Sunscreen goes beyond basic sun protection providing broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection! UV Smart™ Daily SPF 30 uses powerful zinc oxide to protect against damaging UV rays while antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, E, CoQ-10 & Green Tea Extract help to combat free radicals and environmental damage.

Finding the Beauty in Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, we wanted to discuss the importance of recycling old beauty products. We spend lots of money on these items, and usually the containers are just too awesome to toss. Other times, there is just no use for them, and they need to be tossed. Make sure to check out Earth991 to find out which materials are hazardous and how to dispose of them.

Nail Polish:
Most of us have tons of old nail polishes sitting in our bathroom drawer. They are almost empty, dried up, or screams the 80’s and you will never wear them again. Did you know that throwing them away in the trash is harmful to the environment? The Environmental Protection Agency says that nail polish is considered a Household Hazardous Waste Material, and should be disposed of properly. Find a recycling center near you, or, if you are crafty, here’s a couple of fun ways to reuse your old nail polish bottles:
- Get artsy and mix a couple of old colors together
- Use for arts and crafts projects with the kids
- Decorate the bottle and use it as a ring holder

Make Up and Perfume Bottles: Women tend to collect make up and perfume like crazy. Every season, we try to stay up with new trends, colors and scents and end up with a huge collection barely used products. When you are done with your make up (either because you used it all, or the color is soo last season), check with your make up company, as many of them will collect your empty make up containers and recycle them. Some will even give you a product or sample in return! If you are looking to toss old perfume bottles, we suggest checking with your local Hazardous Waste Facility before placing them in the recycling bin. The empty bottles still contain toxins from the perfume that should not be placed with other recyclables. Since some packaging is pretty stylish, you may want to keep the empty containers. Here are a couple of suggestions:
- Use lipstick containers to hold things like pills, Q-Tips, bobby pins, or mini sewing kits.
- Place loose change, jewelry or pills in empty loose powder pots
- Take off the top of a perfume bottle, and use it as a single stem vase
- Fill old bottles with water, and use to mist indoor plants
- Place an essential oil in perfume bottle and add tall wooden skewers to create a room diffuser

Other Lotions and Potions: Both men and women seem to rack up huge collections of bottles and containers. Shampoo bottles, hair gel, face wash, moisturizers (even Antiox™ Daily)….the list goes on and on. When we are done with these products, we usually pour them down the drain or toss them in the trash. If the container is completely empty of any product, it is okay to recycle them. If there is still product in it, you will want to make sure to take to a hazardous waste location. Bottles with product inside are considered flammable and can pollute the landfill.

If you are looking for earth-friendly products, all HydraFacial™ take home products are completely recyclable! Whatever you choose to do with your old beauty products, just make sure you are doing something that Mother Earth would be proud of this Earth Day!

Healthy Foods for Healthy Skin

Wash your face. Exfoliate. Moisturize. Use Sunscreen. We see the commercials, we read the ads, and we buy the product. We get it- there are many things we can do to our skin topically that greatly contribute to the maintenance and overall health of our skin. But, did you know that there is something else you can be doing to compliment your daily skin care regimen? We have learned that there are many foods you can eat that can positively affect the overall look and feel of your skin. The best part? These foods are seriously delicious, and super easy to incorporate into your meals. Here is what we found out:

Vitamin A- Vitamin A is crucial to your skin’s maintenance and repair. There are several delicious ways to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin A. Orange veggies like pumpkin, yams, and carrots are loaded with Vitamin A. Foods like cantaloupe, watermelon, and tomatoes are also very high in Vitamin A. Our suggestions? Create a delicious side dish of Orange Glazed Carrots. All you need to do is simmer 1 pound of cooked carrots in orange juice for five minutes, add 3 tablespoons of brown sugar, ¼ cup orange juice, 2 tablespoons of butter and a pinch of salt. Heat until everything melts together. Enjoy!

Vitamin C- Mom always told us to drink orange juice when we were feeling under the weather. Little did she know that in addition to boosting your immune system, it also has wondrous effects on your skin. Studies show that Vitamin C helps with the appearance of wrinkles and dry, rough skin. Many citrus fruits, peppers, and tomato juice are an excellent source of Vitamin C. While there are several ways to increase your daily intake, here is what we found to be the easiest: add green and red peppers to your chicken tacos, throw together a fruit salad to bring to an afternoon BBQ, or simply listen to Mom and drink a good old fashioned glass of O.J. each morning.

Vitamin E- Eating foods rich in Vitamin E will help prevent pigmentation and improve the overall appearance of the skin. These foods include avocados, spinach, hazelnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, almonds and olive oil. A great way to enjoy these foods? Throw together a spinach salad with sliced avocado. Create a dressing by mixing extra virgin olive oil with balsamic vinaigrette and a splash of lemon juice. Also, keep a baggie of mixed nuts in your car or at your desk, which will give you a healthy option when afternoon hunger hits.

Water- It should come as no surprise that water is an important part of keeping your skin healthy. Not only does water keep your skin cells hydrated, it also helps move toxins out of the body. Drinking eight glasses a day can give your skin amazing results and also help your overall health. Having a hard time drinking eight glasses a day? Do as the most fabulous spas do: cut up your favorite fruits and add them to a pitcher or water bottle. Our favorite fruits to add? Grapefruits, limes, lemons, strawberries, watermelon and oranges. Make sure to change up the combination each day, which will give you a refreshing new taste and ensure your taste buds don’t get bored!

Antioxidants- Fruits like blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are high in antioxidants and can help protect your skin from free radicals that can lead to premature aging. Our favorite way to load up on these colorful berries? Create a delicious dessert by adding a heaping pile of these juicy fruits to a slice of angel food cake and Cool Whip! Enjoy knowing that you are doing your skin a favor.

So you see, what you are eating can have a huge affect on the apperance and health of your skin. So get in the kitchen, channel your inner chef, and whip up some delicious skin-friendly creations.

Make sure to share your ideas with us! For a quick burst of vitamins and antioxidants for your skin, receive a HydraFacial which will give you immediate results and leave your skin feeling healthy and hydrated.
